Please refer to the CSIF FAQ for a how-to and more background information.

Merging PDFs

posted Nov 2, 2012, 3:33 PM by Felix Wong

Here is the syntax for merging PDFs.

gs -q -dNOPAUSE -dBATCH -sDEVICE=pdfwrite -sOutputFile=[filename].pdf [source 1].pdf [source 2].pdf [...]
This is useful if you have many individual PDFs that you wish to print, but want to avoid clicking the Print button and/or having excess cover pages.

Due to the changes from Fedora 15 to Fedora 17, the old SSH keys were not properly reinstated after the OS installation, but that has since be fixed on all computers.

Please refer to CSIF FAQ for more information.

gcc for OS X Mountain Lion

posted Sep 29, 2012, 4:06 PM by Felix Wong

Apple has decided not to ship the gcc compiler (used, among other things, to compile C programs for ECS30) in their latest OS X release named Mountain Lion.

To install gcc, please follow read the following FAQ on Apple's developer website for installing XCode, specifically the sections titled How do I download Xcode, and the OS X and iOS SDKs? and I've installed Xcode 4.3 or later. Where can I find the updated command line tools?.

You must install the command line tools in addition to XCode for access to gcc.

Note that this does not apply to earlier releases of OS X preceeding Mountain Lion.

CSIF Fall 2012 Update

posted Sep 29, 2012, 3:59 PM by Felix Wong   [ updated Nov 2, 2012, 3:34 PM ]

Welcome back to those who are returning from Spring 2012 and greetings to the newcomers for Fall 2012.

For newcomers and returning people alike, please be sure to check this websiste periodically as it will be our main method of distributing news, documentation, etc.

Here are some of the major updates going into Fall quarter 2012:
  • CSIF is roughly 85% done with transitioning all machines to Fedora 17; the other 15% will take place during the first few weeks of Fall quarter so we apologize in advance for any disruptions that may occur
  • The transition from Fedora 15 to Fedora 17 has not been the smoothest, largely due to the fact that the Linux kernel jumped from 2.6.x to 3.x; this means that some programs/features once available in Fedora 15 no longer work or exist in Fedora 17. For clarification, many popular programs are still functional in Fedora 17, so most of the users will not be affected by this. While the CSIF is currently working on resolving these issues, please bear with us since there is a lot of ground to cover. Please contact us if you find any problems, but we will most likely not be able to resolve it immediately.
  • The regular hours of operation are back into effect

That is all the updates we have for now. We hope to see you around the CSIF, and we wish you a good start on the Fall quarter.

Blue Tint on Adobe Flash Modules

posted Apr 27, 2012, 7:12 PM by Felix Wong   [ updated Apr 27, 2012, 7:18 PM ]

For those that have recently ran into the problem of getting a blue tint on Adobe Flash modules (e.g. YouTube videos), here is a solution:

  1. Right-click the Adobe Flash module
  2. Click on "Settings...", which should be 2 spaces from the bottom
  3. Uncheck the box that says "Enable hardware acceleration"
  4. Click the "Close" button
  5. Restart your browser by closing all browser windows before opening up a new window
This has only been tested on CSIF computers. Results may vary with other systems.
